School Update 26th February
It’s an exciting start to the half term with Easter fast approaching!
Interest in Abbot’s Way is gathering momentum increasingly, with our students welcoming more prospective students on their tasters over the coming weeks.
It is fantastic to see each of our Spirit and Flair cohorts growing steadily as students find their educational home, forming valuable friendships and gathering self- belief.
There have been more upgrades across the school including our newly installed bird box which contains an HD camera that is connected to our science lab TV. We really hope to witness some nesting soon!
Our young people are settling into developing routines, working hard and responding positively to a full curriculum across the week.
Collaboration between our learning team is strong and there is nurture and challenge in appropriate measure as students become accustomed once more to a more full time learning environment.
Resources and strategies are designed to support the complex range and combinations of learning differences within each of our classes - multi sensory, memorable and engaging activity are paramount.
Students are benefiting from a child-led, flexible approach to classroom routines and frequent movement times to reset.
Pastoral time is in place each morning, with an opportunity to celebrate national and international events, discuss current affairs and resolve any concerns.
Quiet Time has been introduced at the end of lunchtime, to settle students with a game of chess, some colouring or a book before the afternoon session starts.
This week has seen students engage in a range of topics including habitats, symmetry, building design, graffiti art, characterisation, the environment, angles and vikings. With plenty of team building, independence and communication thrown in to name a few skills being acquired and developed for the future.
Kate, our SENCo, has compiled individual learning plans for students on roll and the team are subsequently establishing termly targets.
Karen, our OT, has started introduction sessions with relevant students which they are enjoying and gaining from already.
Pastorally, friendships are establishing and there is unity developing within the student body who are all beginning to support and encourage each other, showing empathy and a range of natural and growing dynamics across peer groups.
Thank you for your orders to date.
Uniform is due to be delivered this week and we will hand orders to parents as appropriate items arrive.
A reminder that shoes / trainers should, where possible, be black in colour along with bottoms that are also dark or grey(any shade) to complement our colour scheme.
We will be sourcing our sports kit in the coming weeks and will keep you posted.
Consent for our driveway development has now been submitted with Mendip District Council.
All being well, the turnaround for completion of the application process is 8 weeks.
Once the application has been published we will share this information with parents and the wider team around Abbot’s Way in order to gain as many supportive comments as possible to back our application.
This planning consent will enable us to carry out further groundworks scheduled for August.
Our Friday awards assemblies are an ongoing opportunity to celebrate students’ progress, successes and endeavour.
On the last afternoon of this term, Wednesday 31 March, we would like to hold an awards ceremony to which parents are invited to share in our celebration.
Timings and arrangements TBC and Covid strictly dependent.
Finally, a reminder that we are a NUT free school so please do not fill any lunch boxes with anything that contains nuts.
As ever, many thanks for your support and if you do have any questions then please do not hesitate to get in touch.
