School Update 20th July
We hope this finds you enjoying some summer sunshine…
End of Term
After a week away from the office, it is lovely to be able to reflect on amazing achievements from our students. Being able to award our young people for such a range of skills and attributes is a testament to their individual brilliance and increasing self belief. We hope that all of our students are as proud of themselves as we are of them.
Our students experienced a huge range of Venture days towards the end of term - from Castle Cary to Bristol Zoo to Wild Place Project to Avalon marshes to Wells to Longleat to Glastonbury Abbey. The final weeks were as jam packed as ever with enriched learning experiences.
Not to mention our Sports Gala which was pushed onto our final day by rain… our students did themselves proud and put in 100% effort and commitment.
With a carousel of house competitions, there was healthy rivalry and great peer support.
With a long summer break ahead, we are maintaining some working hours across the next few weeks, to facilitate prospective parent visits and ensure developments are in place for the Autumn term.
We are sad to lose Alison as our teacher of English & Literacy. She has brought imagination, professionalism and a great sense of humour to Abbot’s Way. Although Alison leaves us in this capacity, we hope it will not be the end…. she fits seamlessly into our Abbot’s Way family and has so much to offer in various guises.
Lorna MacCormac will be filling Alison’s shoes from next term. She comes with huge experience of SEN and an energetic enthusiasm for all that Abbot’s Way offers and stands for. We look forward to welcoming Lorna onto our team this September.
Finally some positive news, which in short means if we alter our drawings to a “widened single driveway” and formalise our staggered times for drop off and pick up, then acceptance of our application looks definite.
Highways and Mendip are also willing to discuss interim measures to support an increase in numbers between planning being accepted and works being completed.
There will be a 2 week turnaround in submitting the application as new drawings need to be processed . That said we are confident this will all be expedited with the likelihood of approval being achieved by the end of August.
We will keep you posted on developments as and when, at last, finally, things have turned a corner.
As we are aware that parents and surrounding local authorities have been notified by Somerset LA of their view of the schools position regarding future placements, capacity and our admissions process, we are hoping to find a resolution by meeting with them on Friday to discuss the concerns they have proactively.
It has been a tough fortnight with some confusing communications bringing anxiety to many parties, however we hope to be able to stabilise and establish a positive relationship going forward from here … ,we will feed back what we can and hope that today’s planning update has some impact on the nature of communication regarding Abbot’s Way.
Here’s to a peaceful and warm Summer. As ever, if you have any queries please let us know.
With many thanks as always for your tireless support.
Gareth, Hellen and Team
